style house neoclassic chilote. Its location and the composition of its façade allow the configuration of a fairly harmonic urban space. Of great architectural value, its rhomboid floor plan stands out, demonstrating the talent of Chilote carpenters to adapt to land in unconventional ways. Located in a privileged location in the commune of Chonchi, Isla Grande de Chiloe. Total area 1,000 m2.
Location
Centennial Street
The centennial street is constituted as the foundational axis of Chonchi, which has structured the city since its origin as "Pueblo de Indios" in the mid-eighteenth century.
Unlike most of the towns that arose with the Jesuit missions in the vicinity of the bordering , the San Carlos de Chonchi chapel was located on a higher plateau, somewhat away from the coast, establishing with it a longitudinal axis that related the esplanade of the church and the pier. In this ascending axis - Centennial Street - the main buildings were brought together, configuring over the years a sloping street in which 3 clear levels can be recognized.
Typical Zone
In the year 2000, Centennial street is recognized as Monument National in the Typical Zone category for its historical, architectural and urbanistic, understanding that it represents a "particular typology of Chilote urbanism" and constitutes the material expression of the constructive culture of the time that has transcended to the present day.
The condition of Typical Zone, which affects all the properties included in the declared polygon, implies that any intervention or new work must have the approval of the National Monuments Council, a body dependent on the Ministry of Education that has the role of ensuring conservation. of all the national monuments of the country.
High heritage value
With a high heritage and architectural value, it was built at a time of economic and commercial peak of the town of Chonchi, which was mainly due to the exploitation of the Ciprés de las Guaitecas, an activity in which the port of the city played a strategic role. This construction stands out for reinterpreting the neoclassical style that was the predominant trend in various ports around the world. These trends were adapted to the local reality by carpenters and craftsmen from the Archipelago who complemented their skills with those of European builders who settled in the area. This mixture of cultures gave rise to a unique expression of civil architecture in wood that we now recognize and value as cultural heritage.
